This is a commission I made for Vinny Coyote back in March 2024.
I had long been thinking about making a very wide composition and I quickly recognized this as a great oppotunity to finally do that. This type of image has a clear disadvantage in that it doesn't look good on mobile devices, but I didn't want that concern to limit what this picture could be. I chose a very low horizon so that the characters would pretty much stand on the bottom border of the canvas. With this I hoped to achieve an effect that is very common in comics, specially Italian ones. Of course, the result is an angle that could never be viewed in real life, but I think this level of artificiality enhances the representational quality of the final image.
When I was working on this, I realized that the painting method I had been using over the last year wasn't going to cut it. After some stress I realized I could draw the colors, hatch colors and even draw over the black inked lines to lighten their weight and better represent lighting. The result was an image that feels quite different from my previous works, and so this piece as a whole represents a turning point for me and my art.
The vegetation and the mountains were based on pictures provided by the client and it was a joy to work with these elements and know they were of particular importance to him. This is the sort of experience that only happens when you start doing commissions and is one thing I really like about doing them.
No human left. All is dog.
